Gum Disease
Bellevue, WA
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the tissues in your mouth. Commonly referred to as gingivitis, gum disease, or chronic periodontitis (depending on severity), it can be highly destructive to your teeth, gums, and jawbone if left untreated. At A Smiling Heart Dentistry, we evaluate the level of infection and provide personalized treatment, along with guidance and education to help you maintain a healthy smile.
During your dental cleaning, our hygienists check for signs of gum disease, including measuring the depth of gum pockets. Healthy pockets are 3mm or less—anything deeper could indicate infection.
How Do I Know If I Have Gum Disease?
If you’re noticing any of the symptoms below, schedule an appointment so we can assess your condition. In many cases, a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) can resolve the issue. Common signs of gum disease include:
- Gums Seem Irritated: Red, puffy, or sore gum tissue is often the first sign of infection.
- Gum Bleed: Bleeding during brushing or flossing is not normal and is often an early sign of gum disease.
- Bad Breath or Sour Taste: Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste may indicate infection.
- Teeth Appear Longer: Gum recession from infection can expose more of the tooth, making them appear longer than normal.
Ignoring these signs may lead to further tissue and bone loss, potential tooth extraction, and lasting damage to your oral health. Our team is here to help you treat active gum disease and equip you with the tools to maintain healthy gums at home.
Why Do I Have Gum Disease?
Education plays an important role in prevention. Gum disease begins with plaque—a natural substance made of food particles and saliva. While plaque is a part of your body’s cleaning system, it also attracts bacteria, especially when sugar is present. As bacteria feed, they release acids that erode tooth enamel and irritate your gums.
Gums cannot fight bacteria directly and will begin to recede away from the source of irritation. This recession exposes the tooth’s root and compromises the support system for your teeth. Fortunately, with proper cleaning and care, we can remove the infection and allow your gums to heal.
