Ceramic vs Titanium Dental Implants
Bellevue, WA
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant, or tooth implant, is a device that we use to recreate a tooth root following the loss of a natural tooth. Today, dental implants come with a wide variety of options in width, length, material, and what they can be used for. Patients can use an implant to secure a number of prosthetics including a dental crown, bridge, or denture. Finding the right implant is important to both your immediate needs and your future needs. Working with our staff, we can help you make those decisions following an exam and digital x-ray.
Titanium Implants
Titanium is the material used in the standard implant. It took decades of research for scientists to arrive at this material option. Historical evidence shows attempts at implants and bone repair dating back thousands of years — with materials ranging from shell to rock to bamboo. Titanium proved superior due to its biocompatibility, lightweight structure, and strength.
Titanium implants now have decades of data showing how well restorations perform. Our body heals around the titanium via osseointegration — fusing naturally with the metal for a firm hold. Titanium is an excellent choice for many patients, though not everyone may prefer or tolerate it.
Zirconia Implants
When metal is not the right choice, we offer zirconia implants — a non-metal option made from ceramic. While zirconium oxide contains metal atoms, it is unreactive and classified as metal free. Its white color makes it appealing to patients concerned about dark metal visibility through gum tissue.
Zirconia is biocompatible and may be healthier overall — some studies show lower plaque and tartar accumulation. While strong and durable, zirconia is not as strong as titanium and may be more prone to breakage in some cases.
